A registration has been obligatory since 1 July 2017 if one wants to work as a prostitute. Newcomers to the trade have to notify the authorities before commencing their respective occupation. In addition, prostitutes must regularly attend health consultation that explains them their rights as well as their duties and provides them with forms of support. They must always carry the confirmation of registration and health consultation with them while working afterwards. The registration certificate for persons over age 21 is generally valid for two years, whereas the confirmation of health consultation expires after one year for all those between age 18 and 21. Step 1: Health consultation In order to be able to work as a prostitute, an individual first needs to participate in a consultation at the local health office. Please note that this is not a medical examination but rather an auxiliary conversation that provides said person with all the necessary information on health protection. This appointment must be repeated every six months by people between age 18 and 21, whereas individuals over age 21 have to complete that routine procedure on an annual basis. Step 2: Personal registration Now that this person has received the letter of confirmation with regard to health consultation, he or she can have him- or herself notified at the registration office within whose jurisdiction she will mainly operate. The prerequisite for obtaining the aforementioned registration is that all necessary personal data and documents of confirmation are at hand and that there are no other reasons for exclusion. Such a registration letter is valid for a year for individuals between age 18 and 21 and for two years for people over 21, respectively. Please note: Both the note confirming that a person has participated in health consultation and the personal registration letter can also be issued under a pseudonym (artist‘s name). This is only possible, however, if said alias has already been registered and the corresponding letter of confirmation is already available to the authorities beforehand. Which details and documents must the person subject to registration provide? Personal data • first name and surname • date of birth • citizenship • statement of (principal) residence according to registration law, alternatively a delivery address • federal states or municipalities that the prostitute intends to work in Documents Please bring with you: • 2 photographs • identity card or passport (or certificates issued in lieu of these documents) • work permit for non-EU citizens • certificate confirming a regular participation in health consultation (no older than three months at the initial registration) A registration is only possible if all necessary data and official papers are available. In case of missing documents, a new appointment has to be scheduled so that the letters in question can be handed in and the registration process can be completed at a later point. All statements without guarantee and subject to change.
